STGA attended the Scottish Tourism Alliance events of 2019
As an association our members attend many events over the year to express opinion on tourism related matters and to network. This year the Scottish Tourism Alliance (STA) held Scottish Tourism Months #STM2019. Throughout March events are being held in advance of the tourist season. One of the main event was held in Glasgow’s SEC 13 & 14 March. Our members were there and here is what they got up to:
Viola Lewis, Linda Arthur (Chair) and Pat Blain attended the events on 14 March.
The topics under discussion were diverse, they ranged from Disrupting the Future; Marketing Musts – A social media masterclass; Our Future World, the Challenge the Opportunity; Mental Health in Hospitality.
Disrupting the Future – looked at factors that can disrupt the future of tourism and what we can do about them.
Marketing Musts – Are you Insta-worthy? This session examined some best in class examples to provide inspiration and a clear understanding of how to grow brand awareness, engage customers and create effective content.
Our Future World was a discussion led by Harold Goodwin about responsible tourism and what we, as an industry, can do to be more environmentally aware. More Info
Mental Health in Hospitality is something not spoken about much. As tourist guides working for ourselves there are many hidden pressures. This talk opened the discussion about mental health in tourism.
On the previous day there were talks about Food Tourism – keeping it local, building brands, Tripadvisor and Teamwork.
Scottish Thistle Awards
In the evening the coveted annual Scottish Thistle Awards was held. We were proud and excited that one of our very own, Elma McMenemy had won the Aberdeenshire Regional Finals and was shortlisted for the Scottish Hospitality Hero Award in the National Finals. The 2019 Scottish Thistle Award National Finals award ceremony was held last night, evening of 14 March. Elma was there with fingers and toes crossed (as were all of the STGA).
Unfortunately she was pipped at the post on this occasion. We are very proud of you Elma for getting through to the national finals, and to us you are always a hero!
