Have you become bewitched by the Outlander series?

Would you like to see where the series was filmed or has it inspired you to visit Scotland ? Don’t worry if you are not an Outlander fan, because these places are just as spectacular to those who have no knowledge of the series… beware though, it might get you hooked!!

Spend a day retracing the footsteps of you favourite characters. Begin by browsing the antique shops of 1940s ‘Inverness’, pay a visit to where Claire and Frank stayed in their guesthouse and pose for a photograph beside the statue where ghostly Jamie gazed up to Claire’s room in the first episode.

Continue on to the picturesque village known as ‘Cranesmuir’ to see a genuine Scottish town steeped in 18th Century style. Walk the cobbled streets and see where Gellis Duncan and her husband Arthur lived, the same house where both Claire and Gellis were arrested when they were accused of witchcraft. You can also find the gorgeous herb garden which Claire works in which is supposed to be near Castle Leoch. A truly hidden gem. Gaze onto the mercat cross, the scene of a young lad’s ear being nailed to a wooden beam for punishment, before Jamie rescues him.

Finally visit Castle Leoch itself, home to Colum MacKenzie and his clan in the 18th Century episodes. It also features in the 20th Century where Claire and Frank visit the castle ruins on a day trip.

This is just a taster of what could be incorporated into a day’s sightseeing. You could just as easily choose to see see the home of the Duke of Sandringham where Jamie fights a duel, Lallybroch, the garrison of ‘Fort William’, the railway station where Claire and Frank say their goodbyes or, if you are feeling brave, the prison where Jamie was incarcerated at the end of Series 1.

Whatever locations you choose, you will see Diana Gabaldon’s imagination was inspired by real places and heritage, captured in the sweeping scenery of Scotland.
