Discover the fascinating history of the famous Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile.
Meet at The Hub, walk up to castle esplanade. If visiting castle allow approx 90 minutes, with 30 minutes orientation by the guide then 60 minutes free time. Otherwise, if not willing/able to pay castle entrance simply spend 10 – 15 minutes on Esplanade.
Then walk down Royal Mile, visiting various closes off Lawnmarket – Milnes Court, Writer’s Close.
Arrive at Parliament Square. Visit St Giles Church ( approx 20 minutes). If very small group of 4 – 6 people possible to visit Parliament Hall behind Parliament Square ( approx 20 minutes).
Explain Mercat Cross and City Chambers opposite Cross.
Continue down Royal Mile, pause at Tron Church.
Pass John Knox House, Storytelling Centre and former Netherbow Town Gate.
Continue down Canongate, visiting closes and gardens of this area en route – Dunbar Close, Whitehorse Close.
Arrive at Holyrood. Allow 60 minutes to visit Palace if this is to be included. Otherwise explain about the Palace from outside. Also explain Parliament building. Possible to enter Parliament if of interest. Free tours are available on Friday, Saturday and Monday. Guide can take groups to Debating Chamber on those days, and also any days when Parliament is not in session ( throughout the summer recess).
With a young energetic group an alternative route would be to take North Bridge to Princes Street and take group up Calton Hill for superb views of old and new Edinburgh. Then from Calton Hill descend Jacob’s Steps from Regent Road and arrive at Holyrood.
Another meeting place is often Charlotte Square. Proceed along George Street, turn down Frederick Street to reach Princes Street. Enter Princes Street Gardens and walk to Mound. From there walk up the hill to the Royal Mile and pick up the walk as above at the Castle.
