Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson

Alexander Thomson was an architect who was active in Glasgow around the middle of the 19th century. As his nickname suggests, he favoured the classical style of architecture, although ‘Greek’ is too narrow a term to define the varied influences on his style. His buildings contain elements of Egyptian and oriental architecture.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Charles Rennie MacIntosh, was born in Parson Street in Glasgow’s Townhead area a stone’s throw from the ancient gothic cathedral. He was one of eleven children and his father worked for the City of Glasgow Police. The family would move to the nearby Dennistoun area of the city a little further east of Townhead where MacKintosh spent his early years.
