Green Badge Guide Training

Green badge courses will be arranged from time to time by a variety of training providers. They are normally run to meet market demand in Orkney, Shetland, the Western Isles, Northern Highlands or North East Scotland only.

Please note that there are no plans to run a Regional course for Edinburgh and the Lothians.

 

Course Structure

The course covers Core Knowledge, Professional Guiding Skills and Area Studies.

Total minimum learning time amounts to 600 hours, and can last between 6 to 8 months.

The Final Assessment, under the direct control of the STGA Board of Directors, takes 1-2 days and involves:

  • a practical coach tour, walking tour and site assessments,
  • submission of tour notes and a tour plan,
  • oral questions on Regional Core Knowledge,
  • interview on practical matters,
  • language testing if appropriate.

Requirements

Candidates must have the following recognised and verifiable qualifications or skills appropriate for guiding:

  • a depth of interest in their region of Scotland
  • evidence of academic capability eg SQA Highers or equivalent school leaving qualification and/or STGA Level 5 Qualification  (Yellow Badge)
  • Information Technology skills
  • at least one of the following:
    • foreign language fluency
    • relevant work experience
    • outdoor activity qualification
